I can’t coerce you into this one.
Jealousy lay all your spells to bed;
I’ll choose unloved instead.

If only songs were sung
to guide the doubtful ones
beyond the rough
where not as much is good enough.
If you find yourself amongst the lonely ones,
I will be waiting here with open arms.

I can’t coerce you into this one.
Jealousy lay all your spells to bed;
I’ll choose unloved instead.

Alice Pleasance Liddell

A boat beneath a sunny sky,
Lingering onward dreamily
In an evening of July—

Children three that nestle near,
Eager eye and willing ear,
Pleased a simple tale to hear—

Long has paled that sunny sky:
Echoes fade and memories die.
Autumn frosts have slain July.

Still she haunts me, phantomwise,
Alice moving under skies
Never seen by waking eyes.

Children yet, the tale to hear,
Eager eye and willing ear,
Lovingly shall nestle near.

In a Wonderland they lie,
Dreaming as the days go by,
Dreaming as the summers die:

Ever drifting down the stream—
Lingering in the golden gleam—
Life, what is it but a dream?

I don’t know what it is, but everything about Alice Liddell and Lewis Carrol/Charles Dodgson fascinates me quite peculiarly. This eerie poem by Dodgson/Carrol is the icing on the cake. For some reason, reading anything that relates to the origin of “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland” leaves me strangely euphoric and at peace. I think a painting is past due.
